These construction projects present highly technical challenges, whether road, rail, light rail, metro, tram, bridge or airport. They demand in-depth knowledge of construction methods, the potential risks, and procurement processes.

We believe our specialist team may have more direct experience of this sector than any other brokerage anywhere: they’ve arranged insurance for some of the largest tunnelling projects in the world. Alesco RMS will put together a comprehensive programme of cover to meet the needs of every stakeholder involved with your transport tunnelling or infrastructure construction project.

  • We will work with lenders and other stakeholders, procurement frameworks and the leading codes of practice to help ensure that your project can progress without delay.

Transport infrastructure

We have considerable experience with road, rail and tram systems, and bridges. We have key involvement in Crossrail, the largest construction project in Europe, as well as the Forth River Crossing, the largest construction project in Scotland. We also have heavy involvement in complex rail property & liability risks, rolling stock, train build, metro systems and rail assets. Our knowledge of the public sector and the OJEU process means we understand what you need and the challenges you face.

Tunnelling infrastructure

Tunnelling projects present complex challenges, which means it can be more difficult to access market capacity. These challenges include geotechnical conditions, natural hazards, the adequacy of site investigations, the experience of contractors and designers, methods of excavation, and the management of risk. We have particular experience of managing interface risks with other aspects of construction or with existing, independently insured structures (such as the construction of transmission and distribution lines).

Arranging construction insurance for tunnel projects (including for a tunnel-boring machine), at competitive terms and with favourable coverage, also demands proof that the International Tunnel Code of Practice (ITCoP) has been addressed. Our specialist construction team is fully conversant with this code and we work closely with project owners, contractors, consultants and various stakeholders to promote and secure best practice – which helps to manage project risks and meet underwriters’ expectations.

P3 projects (public/private partnership)

As countries seek to repair or replace existing infrastructure, or build new infrastructure, there is a growing need to seek private-sector investment. Alesco RMS offers specialist technical advice, risk advisory, placement and claims services for all types of project-financed infrastructure projects, including concessions, PPP and P3.

The procurement of each project will involve a variety of stakeholders, both public and private, including public-sector authorities, lenders, developers, contractors and service providers. Infrastructure projects have unique risk profiles, creating a range of potential consequences for each stakeholder. We focus on protecting the objectives of each stakeholder by designing a contractually compliant insurance programme which brings all of the requisite cover together into a genuinely bespoke programme. Some of our PPP projects include:

  • A US$1.6bn river crossing in the USA
  • A US$3bn metro system in South America
  • A US$3bn rapid rail link in Africa.
